Frequently Asked Questions
1. How much experience do I need?
We recommend that you have at least 8–12-months experience practicing Yoga so that you are familiar with the basic poses.
We invite you to fill out an application form even if you are unsure about your experience. Through our selection process we will help you figure out if this program is appropriate for you.
2. What is different about this training from other trainings?
Integrated Approach
Many teacher trainings teach the different subjects separately with little or no connection to each other. As a result, many students do not understand how to apply knowledge from one area to another or how to bring them together in their actual practice and teaching. Unlike other trainings, our program will integrate the subjects together so that you can learn, apply and practice new skills immediately.
For example, when you learn the technique for a posture, you will also learn the anatomy of that pose, how to modify it for different bodies and how to teach it.
Personal Attention
To ensure the continuity and integration of each aspect of the training you will have your primary teachers present in all of your classes.
You will benefit from this in several ways, including:
· Questions will be addressed immediately – e.g. if you wonder why you should turn out your thigh in Trikonasana, your anatomy expert will be there to answer you;
· If you receive a correction in one class, that teacher will follow-up with you to ensure that you have understood it in another class;
· Classes will build on each other, reinforcing important concepts.
Teaching Skills
This training is focused on developing teaching skills. Your daily practices will build on and reinforce the skills and knowledge you have gained on previous days.
We will not waste time in led-classes that you could take at your usual Yoga studio.
3. I am worried that this training is too hard for me. I don’t know if my practice is good enough. How advanced does my Yoga practise have to be in order to do the teacher training course?
It is NOT necessary to be flexible or to be able to do advanced poses in order to be a Yoga teacher. In fact, it is often the case that people who have had to struggle with their practice become great teachers because they understand how to guide students based on their own difficulties.
4. I am not sure if I want to teach Yoga. What are the benefits for someone who just wants to learn more?
Most students who attend Yoga teacher training courses are not sure if they want to teach. By taking this course, you will find out more about what it is like to teach Yoga. Even then, if you are sure that you do not want to teach, you will benefit greatly by deepening your understanding of Yoga and learning to become a more self-sufficient Yoga practitioner.
5. I am already teaching Yoga. What are the benefits for someone who is already a teacher?
If you are already teaching Yoga, you can always learn more and improve your teaching skills. The course is designed to include practical, hands-on clinics to teach how the various poses ‘work’ – for example, which muscle groups are being used, what organs and bodily functions are stimulated or subdued, and what emotional states are promoted or impeded.
The course will also include several opportunities to practice your teaching and communication skills, where you will receive feedback and constructive criticism. Furthermore, with our diverse team of teachers, you will be exposed to different ideas and approaches to teaching which may inspire your own teaching.
Should you not wish to participate in the full TTC, there is always the option to join the Continuing Education Programs.
6. What kind of Yoga will be taught?
Hatha Flow Yoga will be the asana taught on this training. It is an invigorating and free style of Yoga that integrates movement and breath with detailed attention to alignment. The sequences will include the major postures practiced in the Iyengar and Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga lineages.
You will learn how to practice and teach these postures in a flowing vinyasa style and in a more static style (commonly referred to as ‘hatha’ yoga), and how to use props to enhance the effect of the postures.
Our aim is to help you become a versatile Yoga practitioner teacher; skilled in using different tools of Yoga to achieve your objectives.
7. Will everyone who does the Teacher Training receive certification?
It is our hope to award each student a certificate at the end of the training program. However, we cannot provide a guarantee. The purpose of the application process is to help us ensure that you have the ability to graduate from the program.
Evaluation will be based on class attendance and participation, grasp of concepts and final assessment. If you are accepted onto the training, we will do everything we can to make sure that you graduate, including giving you feedback and assistance if necessary.
8. How do I become a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT)?
After you receive your certificate you are eligible to become a RYT. To become registered, you need to fill out an application form and pay a fee to Yoga Alliance. Please visit www.yogaalliance.org/Apply.html for more information.
